The land-locked country of Botswana borders South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is a fascinating country, with interesting terrain and habitats, some of which include the Okavango Delta, the Kalahari Desert and the Savuti area. Botswana is home to some of Africa’s better-known game reserves including the Moremi Wildlife Reserve and Chobe National Park.

Francistown
dates back to the gold rush in 1860 and by being strategically placed on the main roads to Gaborone, Zimbabwe, Maun and Kazungula, serves as a stopover for tourists travelling to the safari territories. It is one of the oldest towns in Botswana and although it is the country’s second largest urban centre, it still retains its character.
The National Music Eisteddfod , held annually in July, is a great opportunity to hear traditional Botswanan music. Schools, colleges, and choirs travel from all over the country to perform in Selebi-Phikwe, between Gaborone and Francistown. Expect to see traditional dances and music from all regions of Botswana. There are hunting dances and dances for particular celebrations such as weddings, coming-of-age ceremonies and births.
Gaborone
is the capital of Botswana and dates back to 1887.
The Maitisong Festival, held annually in March, is Botswana's biggest festival of performing arts. It takes place in several venues around the capital city of Gaborone. There is a real buzz throughout Gaborone during the festival. Stalls serve food and drink and the streets are alive with spectators and performers alike.
The Kalahari Desert
is a semi-desert area, covering almost two thirds of Botswana. Home to the Bushmen or San people, the area has little vegetation, bare pans and vast open spaces.

The Kalahari Desert is one of the most inhospitable places in Africa. Most of the time, it is a place to wonder at the surrounding desolation and the vastness of Africa, but during the rains (Nov - Dec), it is transformed into a startlingly beautiful, never-ending meadow.
Tsodilo, a World Heritage Site, is called the 'Louvre of the Desert' and contains one of the highest concentrations of rock art in the world wih over 4,500 paintings are preserved in a small area (10 sq. km) of the Kalahari Desert. The archaeological record gives a chronological account of human activities and environmental changes over at least 100,000 years
Makgadikgadi salt pans
The Makgadikgadi Pan is a large salt pan in northern Botswana, the largest salt flat complex in the world.
Flamingo Migration
Towards the end of the rainy season (Mar - Jun) in Botswana, leggy, long-necked flamingos grace the wilderness of its Makgadikgadi salt pans to breed. The sea of squawking, pink birds is a mesmerising interruption to the seemingly infinite pans. During their fleeting stay, watch the flocks of Flamingo tend to their newly born chicks in the shimmering shallow lagoons made from the floods.
Kasane
is a small border town in the North of Botswana and borders Zimbabwe. It is the gateway to the Chobe National Park and Chobe River.

The Maun Carnival
Annually in August, a procession through the streets of Maun is the prelude to a day filled with fun, food, music and laughter for everyone.
The Moremi Wildlife Reserve
covers most of the north-eastern and central Okavango Delta and boasts a vast range of animals. The Moremi Wildlife Park is at the heart of the delta. It has the widest range of habitats. You can explore the eastern fringes of the delta in 4WD or on foot and stay in campsites or luxury game lodges. Or head off in a canoe for a few nights.

created by the Okavango River, covers an area of approximately 15 000 square km and consists of a network of channels, lakes, flood plains and islands. The Okavango Delta is an incredible experience at any time of the year, but the best chance of seeing animals is in the dry season between April and October, when herds of elephants travel hundreds of miles as waterholes dry up in the Kalahari. |
