The Island of Mozambique (1991)
Cabo Delgado

is the northernmost province of Mozambique. Cities in the province include Pemba.

Nampula

Nampula - the capital city of Nampula Province is the third largest city after Maputo and Beira.
The Island of Mozambique
Declared a World Heritage site in 1991, the fortified city of Mozambique is located on this island, a former Portuguese trading-post on the route to India. The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed on the island in 1498 and claimed it for Portugal.
Niassa

This is the most sparsely populated province in the country.

Beira, the capital of the province, is the second largest city and has an international harbour. Struck more than any other city by the ravages of war, the city is undergoing a total face-lift.

Zambezia is the most-populous province in Mozambique.
Gaza

Xai-Xai, in the province of Gaza, is a bustling town with markets, shops, restaurants, bars, petrol stations banks, and a post office. The beach of Praia do Xai-Xai, approximately 12 km from Xai-Xai, is a popular tourist attraction. A coral reef running parallel to the shore offers good snorkeling and protects the beach from strong waves.

Inhambane

The town of Inhambane existed in the 10th century, and was the southernmost port used by Arabs for slave trading. The region was visited by Vasco da Gama in 1498, who claimed Inhambane Bay for Portugal. The Portuguese established a trading post at Inhambane in 1534.
Guinjata Bay

Set in the remote area of Inhambane, Guinjata Bay is the ideal spot for relaxation, scuba diving or fishing. Whale Sharks are seen near Guinjata Bay all year round. Humpback Whales and dolphins also visit Guinjata's shores. |
Maputo

the province excludes the city of Maputo (which comprises a separate province).
Goba Border Post
The Goba border post in the district of Namaacha, in the southern Mozambican province of Maputo, linking Mozambique to Swaziland has officially opened to the movement of people and goods 24 hours a day. Goba border is also another transit point to and from South Africa via Swaziland. The border post is equipped with computers for passport and trade document checks. Goba border post also shortens by 50 km the distance between Maputo and Mbabane, the political capital of Swaziland, and by 100 km the distance between Maputo and the South African coastal city of Durban. Meanwhile, Di-Stefano Honwana, provincial director of Immigration, said the border post of Ressano Garcia, will not open 24 hours before 2010, adding that it would still extend opening hours during Christmas and Easter Holidays.
Maputo
The city is surrounded by Maputo Province, but is administered as its own province.
In the capital city of Maputo formerly Lourenco Marques, you are never far from the coast and visitors to the city can enjoy the refreshing sea breeze at the many restaurants serving locally caught seafood. Along the marginal is the fish market, where you will find fresh fish for the barbeque without all the effort of catching it.
Avante Mozambique! Festival
The country’s First Annual Cultural Tourism Festival, this two-week long event celebrates the nation’s rich culturally diverse ethnic groups.
Independence Day
falls on the 25 June for Mozambique. It is greeted with celebrations, especially in the capital of Maputo. The day starts off with an address by the president, choirs and performances of traditional dances. The festivities climax with a huge concert in the national stadium featuring big names in modern-day Mozambiquen music. There are cultural events throughout the week leading up to the holiday. The National Dance Company deliver a gala performance, involving current and traditional poetry, music and dance. There is also a national exhibition of visual arts.
Inhaca Island
situated a short boat ride from Maputo, has incredible natural beauty and is well known for its diverse birdlife.
