Archaeological Site of Cyrene
A colony of the Greeks of Thera, Cyrene was one of the principal cities in the Hellenic world. It was Romanized and remained a great capital until the earthquake of 365. A thousand years of history is written into its ruins, which have been famous since the 18th century. The site was given World Heritage status in 1982.

Germa is the place to come to for a visit to the ruins of Garama, the ancient city of the Garamantians, built around the 1st century AD. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in all of Libya.

The Germa Arts, Heritage and Tourism Festival is normally held in the month of February.


Sabha

The Sahara Desert begins at Sabha. There is a big lake inside the Sahara Desert near Sabha named Gaberoun, the home of a former village which has now become a popular tourist spot.

Archaeological Site of Leptis Magna
The Archaeological Site of Leptis Magna are the remains of the Phoenician port Lpgy, that was integrated into the Roman Empire in 46 BC. The site was inscribed onto the World Heritage List in 1982.

The Nalut Spring Festival, normally held in late March of every year, revives and promotes Berber culture and has become a major tourist attraction.

Derg Tourist Festival for Arts and Heritage
Held in September, this festival features shows of traditional music, traditional crafts and exhibits of local culture and heritage.

Ghadames International Tourist Festival
Held annually in Octover, this festival is a gathering of people who feast, sing and dance and celebrate Tuareg Berber culture.

Old Town of Ghadamès
Ghadamès, known as 'the pearl of the desert', stands in an oasis. It is one of the oldest pre-Saharan cities and an outstanding example of a traditional settlement. The site was declared a World Heritage Site in 1986.

Ghat International Tourist Festival
Held in December, this festival lasts for three days. It is an important festival where Tuareg tribes from Libya, Algeria and Niger, and tourists, meet and celebrate the Tuareg Berber traditional culture. The Tuareg's best travel companion, the camel, plays an important role in the festival.

Rock-Art Sites of Tadrart Acacus
The Acacus Mountains have a large variation of landscapes, from differently coloured sanddunes to arches, gorges, isolated rocks and deep ravines and are situated east of the city of Ghat. The area is known for its rock-art and was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1985 because of the importance of these paintings and carvings. The paintings date from 12,000 BC to 100 AD and reflect cultural and natural changes in the area.
