This town is closest to the South African border post at Van Rooyen’s Gate. Modern Mafeteng has emerged as a commercial centre for the district, but earlier history was not a smooth one having lived through the Gun war of 1880. Vey uncommon endemic birds and sheep dogs can be of a great view in the park, However the wildlife is not in such abundance but one can find the antelope, eight legged eland, as well as shepherds in their karosses. Scampering out and about in the hillsides are the grey rhebok with grey wooly coats and fluffy white tails and very long ears. Only found above 2000m and endemic to this region is the bonsai hamster which stores its food in squirrel like fashion in an attempt to survive the bitter cold winters
