Kigali Province (location of the Capital)

Rwanda is the most densely populated country in Africa and also heavily cultivated. It is also one of Africa's top birding countries. Other highlights include Akagera National Park and Nyungwe National Park, which is home to chimpanzees, troops of Colobus Monkeys and rare birds. Lake Kivu is surrounded by the mountains of the Rift Valley and the dramatic volcanic cones of the Virungas. Tracking the magnificent African Mountain Gorilla through the Virunga Mountains is a thrilling and moving experience. A malaria prophylactic is strongly recommended.

Heroes' Day
Annually in February, Heroes' Day is basically Veterans' Day. The entire town collects in the local stadium for speeches honoring the soldiers who have died serving the country, dances, music and a parade.

Mother and baby gorilla

Musanze lies near Lake Bulera and the Volcanoes National Park and is home to an airstrip. The city is often used as the jump-off point for visiting the famous Mountain gorilla. In the Virunga
Mountains in the Volcanoes National Park, nothing can prepare you for the impact of encountering a fully-grown silverback gorilla, up to three times the size of an average man, yet remarkably peaceful and tolerant of human visitors. This is where Dian Fossey spent the last two decades of her life studying these endangered gorillas.
Kwita Izina- Gorilla Naming Ceremony
Annually in June, the most important public event in Rwanda's conservation circles takes place in Kinigi, Musanze District near the Volcanoes National Park. Kwita Izina is the annual gorilla naming ceremony modelled around human child-naming ceremonies practiced by the Rwandan communities. Each year, all gorilla babies born in the past 12 months are given names in the same fashion as human children.
